Worm Moon - Full Moon in Virgo that transitions shortly after into the sign of Libra on March 18th brings communication, grounding, gratitude, harmony and balance in your life and relationships.

What is a Worm Moon?
The traditional Farmers Almanac is a North American guide for seasonal weather forecasts, moon phases, sunrises and sunsets, and gardening practices which support the farmer working with the natural cycles of mother nature. The moon phases are indicators of seasonal changes in the environment and do not apply exclusively to full moon events, rather are for each phase to be in harmony with tending to the land sustainably.

Specifically, the Full Moon in March goes by the name Worm Moon, which was originally thought to refer to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring. The arrival of earthworms invites robins and other birds to feed is a symbol of warmer days to come.

Historical attributes and territory recognition

To give even more context, Indigenous people have names for this March Moon and similar to the Farmers Almanac, it also symbolizes the appearance or reappearance of certain animals:

  • The Eagle Moon,
  • The Goose Moon (Algonquin, Cree),
  • The Crow Comes Back Moon (Northern Ojibwe)

while others refer to the signs of the season in association with the moon:

  • The Sugar Moon (Ojibwe) marks the time of year when the sap of sugar maples starts to flow.
  • The Wind Strong Moon (Pueblo) refers to the strong windy days that come at this time of year.
  • The Sore Eyes Moon (Dakota, Lakota, Assiniboine) highlights the blinding rays of sunlight that reflect off the melting snow of late winter.

In Windsor Essex County, Ontario, Canada, I am residing on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, comprised of the Ojibwe, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi Peoples. I would like to respectfully acknowledge the land on which I gather on today and learn more about how these people honour the moon cycles in their daily and spiritual practices.

It's so interesting to see different perspectives for the same lunar event. I look forward to learning more on my spiritual journey and very much enjoy working with the moon, specifically new and full moon events.

Astrological Lunation Details

The Full Moon begins its journey in Virgo and a few hours later moves into the sign of Libra. This is an interesting dynamic because we get to experience two zodiac signs energy for this lunation. Some sources stick to identifying it as the "Virgo Full Moon" and others refer to it as "Libra Full Moon" but I intuitively believe that the combined energies from these signs are present and brings a much needed energetic transformation.

Virgo is the zodiac earth sign associated with the symbol of the maiden for beauty, purity, and tranquility.

The maiden is a symbol of  Astraea, the is the virgin Greek Goddess of justice, innocence, purity and precision. According to her myth, she was the last of the immortals to live with humans but fled from earth during the Golden Age as humanity became wicked in the procession of the Age of Man. As directed by Zeus, she ascended to heaven to become amongst the stars as the constellation Virgo. She is also identified with goddesses Dike (Justice) seen in Tarot Card associated with the Libra zodiac sign and Nemesis (Rightful Indignation).

But I digress, Virgos are practical, organized, efficient and excel at the details. However, their analytical nature can get them trapped in paralysis by analysis and indecision. As a mutable sign, they are adaptable and versatile but when being too flexible need to take a stand and communicate their needs. Mercury is the ruling planet of this sign, and is why communication is attributed to Virgos.

This Full Moon in Virgo occurring through the lenses of rose-coloured glasses in dreamy Pisces season. Virgo energy will help to gather information on our inner emotional state that needs to be released and help us to communicate our truth. In the form of being precise in what you are aspiring to accomplish you can let go of what no longer is serving you which can energetically cleanse and purify your internal emotional state.

For this lunation I would suggest writing a letter outlining what emotional struggles you've been dealing with, analyze and reflect on how they have been impacting your day to day, and energetically release them from you by burning the letter or doing a meditation to cleanse this stagnant energy. You can even choose to use crystals and essential oils that correspond to Virgo and Pisces in your meditation. This will not only assist you to get back down to earth and stay grounded in Virgo energy, but can also allow yourself to make room for aligning with bigger dreams before Pisces season is over.

Libra is the zodiac air sign associated with the scales which is symbolic for fairness, balance, order, justice (as in the Tarot card too). For this reason, goddesses Dike (Justice) and Nemesis (Rightful Indignation) are closely related to Libra energy. Similarly, Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and affection, harmony, beauty, refinement, abundance, and sympathy which is why this air sign is also closely related to goddesses Aphrodite Urania "Heavenly Aphrodite" and Lakshmi.

By having Libra energy present shortly during and after this lunation means that it is a time to let go of things that no longer serve you as suggested in the Virgo section above. In general, Full Moon are a time to shed to old to prepare for planting new seeds of intention at the next New Moon. Specifically, Libra energy is here to restore balance, harmony, and love into relationships, whether it be with ourselves or in romantic ones. You can adapt the full moon ritual suggestion to incorporate healthy emotions of love and affection into your letter, as a form of self love and forgiveness for any unresolved emotions. You are also reminded to see the beauty in life and be open to mysticism that Pisces season brings.
